Learning to Fly

Descriptive Alt Text

The Northam Aero Club provides flight training under the Air Operators Certificate of the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia.

The first step to a career in Aviation or to obtain the Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) or the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is normally a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). This flight, is a hands on experience flying from the Captain's seat, with an Instructor at your side to guide you through this unforgettable experience. This flight usually lasts approximately 30 minutes and is loggable time towards your licence. Cost is $220.00.

There is no minimum education requirement for the issue of any Australian Pilot's licence. However before a person can fly solo they must be at least 16 years old and hold a suitable Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) issued Medical Certificate. Information on CASA Medical Certificates can be located here: CASA Medical Certificates

The first level of training takes you through to the Recreation Pilot Licence(RPL). A minimum of 25 hours is required prior to gaining your RPL,including 5 hours solo. However a more realistic figure is between 25 and 30 hours depending on how often you fly. It normally takes between 10 and 15 hours to achieve your first Solo Flight. Again this depends on how often you fly.

Having successfully completed your RPL, you are now able to carry passengers in the local training area.

The training can be undertaken in the Club's Cessna C172 or your own aircraft. Each lesson will include either a long or short pre-flight briefing, dual training and debriefing at the conclusion of the flight.

Advantages of learning to fly at Northam are:

Theory courses for the Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) exam and the Private Pilot Licence exam are available on request.
